Adventure Race Rules
All racers and their support person must register at the mandatory pre-race meeting on Friday night. Exceptions must be arranged in advance of the Friday night meeting.
Race morning, one team member must check team in to be official starters and retrieve their team-specific packet from designated location. Obtaining race packet will be your official team check-in.
Teams must enter and leave all transition areas/aid stations and finish together as a team, unless otherwise instructed.
Team members must be in sight of each other at all times. Distance between first and last team member must not exceed 100 yards (unless otherwise instructed).
Teams may receive aid or assistance from a support person at transition areas/aid stations only. Support person may assist with equipment at T/A's, but only team participants may carry canoe to and from water.
Teams must enter and leave mystery challenge areas as a team, and must attempt as a team, all mystery challenges for duration of time allowed or until completed, whichever comes first. Teams not completing any mystery challenge in the allotted time may be held at a designated location for an additional time period. There will be no time added at the finish line for mystery challenge penalties.
Wristbands must be surrendered at finish line for official finish. If any member drops out prior to completion of race, that member's wristband must be given to a race official. Not less than 2 team members may proceed after 1 member drops, but notification of less than complete team must be given to race officials before continuing the race. Finish time will be recorded but will not be an official finish, nor will that team be eligible for awards.
Cut-off times - Any posted cut-off times will be enforced. Teams that proceed will be disqualified.
It is the responsibility of the team participants to be sure that their race number is recorded by a race official in and out of all transition areas and manned checkpoints.
Race numbers must be visible at all times.
Teams must pass through each checkpoint (CP) and transition area (TA) in sequence. Any exceptions will be noted in instruction packet. Failure to do so will result in a minimum of one-hour time penalty.
At manned checkpoints, the team is responsible for being checked out before starting next leg/section by having passport signed or punched. At unmanned checkpoints, the team is responsible for punching/marking their passport and recording any code provided at that point.
Changing a team member during the race is not allowed.
No mode of travel other than specified by race officials is allowed. No travel on unauthorized or restricted routes. These routes will be identified on maps or instruction sheets provided by race officials.
No electronic devices other than watches and altimeters will be allowed. (This means no GPS, etc.) One cell phone per team may be mandatory equipment.
No maps other than those provided by race officials may be carried or used by race participants.
Be prepared to travel on foot at all times during canoe and bike sections.
Crews may not be at all T/A's when you arrive. They may be dropping gear for your later use. Whatever they drop, you must carry with you as you leave the T/A. Nothing may be left behind at any T/A where your crew is not present.
There will be no pre-race gear check. This is an adventure race. Be prepared for all types of weather and course conditions. You will very likely get wet. Carry clothing, safety equipment, food, liquid, and anything else you deem necessary to finish the race safely, efficiently and comfortably. Plan wisely. A dry bag is recommended. There will be aid stations. Plan to use them as secondary to items you carry.
There likely will be at least one water crossing. There could be more for some of you, depending on choices you make. There may be no quick access to crews or dry shoes, etc., so you will have to provide for yourself.
Helmet must be worn at all times during biking segment or any ropes segment. Helmet and PFD must be worn at all times during canoe segment on moving water (see below).
Bike and canoe specific equipment/gear may always be left with the bike or canoe when traveling on foot. But be prepared to travel on foot during bike and canoe segments.
Violation of above rules and regulations, and those received at pre-race meeting or on race day, may result in time penalties of a minimum of one hour or disqualification. Race director will determine extent of penalty. All decisions by race director are final.
In addition to the above, specific rules for the race will be distributed Friday night or Saturday morning before the start.
